UFS201 - 1st VOCABULARY ENTRY


1. Indicate: Be a signal for or a symptom of.
Ø  Get ready for its quirks and foibles to dominate the airwaves Tuesday if the election stays as close as the polls indicate.
2. Conjugate: Inflections showing person, number, gender, tense, aspect, etc.
Ø  Joined together especially in a pair or pairs.
3. Notice: An announcement containing information about an event.
Ø  Most accident insurance policies contain a provision requiring that notice of the injury be given to the company within a certain time generally 30 days after the accident.
4. Habit: An automatic pattern of behaviour in reaction to a specific situation; may be inherited or acquired through frequent repetition.
Ø  Sleep is just a bad habit.
5. Stammer: A speech disorder involving hesitations and involuntary repetitions of certain sounds.
Ø  Sometimes, when crossed in an argument, he will seem to fumble for words, with a disarming, apologetic smile, a brown-eyed stare, and an Oh-gosh stammer.
6. Verb: A content word that denotes an action, occurrence, or state of existence
Ø  Verbs in English come in two flavours.
7. Statement: A message that is stated or declared, a communication (oral or written) setting forth particulars or facts etc.
Ø  The girl makes a statement about herself.
8. Regular:  A regular patron.
Ø  We are inaugurating a regular history section, which will put today's news in the context of relevant historical events.
9. Strange: Being definitely out of the ordinary and unexpected, slightly odd or even a bit weird.
Ø  The strange smell, like dead things, in his house.
10.  Spelling: Forming words with letters according to the principles underlying accepted usage.
Ø  The Cat Stevens incident has its origins in a spelling mistake.
